Week Eleven Theme

The end of thanksgiving is what marks the beginning of real winter for me. The snow storms and the driving that go with it are on their way or already starting. The time of the year that you start thinking about antifreeze, tire tread, flashlight batteries and mittens. The paychecks start to get smaller and the shopping lists start to get bigger. Despite this though, moods start to elevate beyond the dreary fall depression that people seem to be in. The desire to decorate everything overcomes some people and shopping for people other than ourselves begins to happen. You feel like watching movies where good things happen. Houses start to light up and bells start to ring outside stores. Everything seems to brighten up and feels warmer even with the frigid temperatures.  The daylight by this time of the year seems almost non-existent, while the nights seem to never end. The whole state is on its way to being blanketed in snow, as we quickly change from a sunny days to huge blizzards. The winter world of Maine can’t be found anywhere else, with plow drivers tackling any storm and most people driving to work in a blizzard almost unfazed. The weather combines with the holidays and brings a change in people that you only see here,

  1. Glad winter makes someone happy....

For me, winter means lugging endless armloads of firewood from the cellar to the woodbox--and remember this is wood I cut off the stump, bucked to length, split with a maul, stacked outside to dry, hauled in behind a tractor, tossed into the cellar, and stacked again in the cellar.
